The big picture
- HRT users had about 10 percent lower dementia risk over 13 years.
- Link was stronger in some groups but remains an association only.
- Do not start or stop HRT based on this study; discuss with your doctor.
Researchers followed about 180,000 postmenopausal women in the UK Biobank for around 13 years. Women who used HRT had about 10 percent lower risk of any-cause dementia. The link was stronger in women with surgical menopause, APOE ε4 carriers, lower lifetime estrogen exposure, and when started between ages 46 and 56.
This was an observational study. It shows an association, not cause and effect. Women who use HRT may differ from non-users in ways that also affect dementia risk. The study does not mean anyone should start or stop HRT for brain health.
Women’s brain health questions remain open. Studies like this help researchers prioritize trials. Weigh HRT with your doctor based on your own health.
