Hearing loss linked to worse memory scores in large German study

By The Dementia League

The big picture

  • Adults reporting hearing loss had worse memory scores and brain differences.
  • Tinnitus alone showed no similar link in the cross-sectional data.
  • A hearing test is quick; discuss changes with a doctor or audiologist.

A large German study asked adults about hearing loss, then measured memory and reviewed brain scans. People reporting hearing loss had worse memory scores and brain structure differences compared with those who did not. Tinnitus alone was not linked to the same differences.

The study measured everyone at one point in time. That design shows an association, not cause. It cannot determine whether hearing loss leads to memory change or whether other factors explain both.

Hearing is one risk factor experts consider worth acting on. A hearing test is quick, and treatment including hearing aids can help people stay connected. Ask a doctor or audiologist about a check if changes are noticed.
