Better heart health scores linked to lower stroke and dementia risk

By The Dementia League

The big picture

  • Higher Life’s Essential 10 scores linked to lower stroke and dementia risk.
  • Study followed nearly 123,000 adults and showed association, not proof.
  • Pick one doable habit; discuss medication factors with your doctor.

Life’s Essential 10 covers diet, activity, nicotine, sleep, weight, lipids, blood pressure, glucose, alcohol, and sedentary time. Researchers scored nearly 123,000 UK Biobank adults and followed them forward. Higher scores linked to lower stroke or dementia risk and more healthy years after age 50.

This was a prospective cohort study. It shows a link rather than proof. Healthier habits often travel with other advantages, so cause cannot be isolated.

The same basics that protect the heart appear repeatedly in brain-health research. Pick one doable habit and talk with your doctor about medication-related items such as blood pressure or glucose.
